One of the things that young boys in the classroom especially like is when a lesson seems to have a bigger picture to it, an application, or for younger students, the thought that it is a game with a goal.
Whenever possible in the classroom, play on most young boy’s love of games and competition. A specific lesson plan stripped out of the context can be rather dull, inversely, making a game or Gestalt activity out of something is a great way to breathe fire into a specific curriculum.
This is what I did recently in a 4th grade common core math lesson plan I made called “Feet to Inches”. Rather than just having the class solve a set of problems in a sheer sense, it is part of a mission to get a military HumVee to safety (see below).
